Some say that there are NO MUSTS in AA… actually, if you are working the Program outlined within the AA Text Book; there are 96 Musts. I heard someone say at a meeting that they were falling short on working the “Spiritual Aspect” of the program. It was quickly pointed out to them that there is NO SPIRITUAL ASPECT of this program - and that this IS a Spiritual Program of Recovery. The entire Program is Spiritual in Nature. There is no “Aspect” to it. (aspect means portion, perspective, section) We must do this work or we will die, of course , unless, you are NOT an alcoholic of the hopeless variety.
If I need accounting advice I go to my accountant. If I need legal advice I go to a lawyer. And if I need cooking advice, I go to Ms. Ray.. lol. But if I need advice on beating this drinking thing, on becoming recovered from the state that I was in, from escaping death that I was living. Then I go to someone who knows how to count, leagize, cook and get sober. Period.
If you don’t have the faith, that God is everything, and without Him you have nothing (this is what the steps and the Bog Book teaches us) then you wil continue to hold on to your way, your thinking, and your ego, and you won’t get this. You will go back to you drama and chaos and live a life of futility and misery - ultimately getting dunk or blowing your brains out. This is not the fate that God wants for His child, He wants you to live, be happy, joyous and free, and experience all that He has made for you ioon this life.
“We admitted we were powerless over alcohol…”
The Doctor’s Opinion, xxv-xxxii.

“…that our lives had become unmanageable.”
Chapter 3: More About Alcoholism, 30-43.
This process is not easy, adversely it is not difficult, if you are willing, honest and open minded. If you are Not Willing, it is difficult. If you are Not Honest, it is Difficult. If you are Not Open Minded, it is Difficult. In fact, without these factors, it will be almost down right impossible, but since I’ve seen so many miracles in this program, I would be amiss to even suggest that, because with God all things are possible.
Two opposites cannot inhabit the same person simultaniously. Happy/Sad, Angry/Friendly, Depressed/Elated. So when we are working selflessly with another Alcoholic, and giving of ourselves, our time and our energy without any desired compensation, then the selfishness that used to encompass the whole of our character slowly begins to die off.
The writing of the Big Book took several months to accomplish. Drafts were sent back and forth to and from New York and Akron. After the New York members had reviewed each chapter, Akron members were given a chance to give their input.
… and acceptance is the answer to all of my problems. This is true, not only because the Big Book tells me so, but because I’ve actually, honestly, sincerely, willingly, tried it, in all of my affairs, and it does work. There are some necessary actions to take, and nothing happens over-night and in “my time” but it does happen if I do these things, and they aren’t always on my “list of things I most want to be doing” but would I rather be drinking and living the way I was living? That answer is an emphatic NO.
AA Meetings: Big Book Step Study Meetings are thre best typw of meeting, although all AA Meetings have their place. However, the basic text, the Big Book, or the lack of its study and practice is the main reason why folks don’t recover and go out, or comit suicide in AA, or continue to live lives of intolerance and dispare.
